Following morning pickup from your hotel or riad in Fez, meet your private guide and board your air-conditioned vehicle for the 1-hour drive to Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities. Along the way you will cross the fertile desert plains of Saiss and admire the vineyards and olive groves for which this region is famous. During your 3-hour visit to Meknes, you will visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail, the resting place of one of Morocco's most powerful leaders.
You will continue to the bustling Place el-Hedim following your private guide through the bustling souks. Enjoy lunch at your leisure in one of the cafes or restaurants (own expense) in the Old Town. After lunch, drive to the hillside town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun, considered the most significant religious site in Morocco. It was here, in the 8th century, that Moulay Idriss introduced the religion of Islam to Morocco. See the shrine where Moulay Idriss I is buried and learn more about his life and achievements from your guide.
Next, you'll head from here to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Volubilis, an ancient Roman settlement, admiring the alleyways, gates, monuments, and mosaic floors. Dating from the second and third centuries, the Roman ruins here are considered to be the best preserved in Morocco. Take in panoramic views over the mighty Rif Mountains from your vantage point on the hillside, then re-board your vehicle for the return journey to your accommodation in Fez, where the tour will come to an end.
